How to obtain a Marriage License during Covid19

Washington DC, Maryland, Virginia

 

Due to Covid19, getting a marriage license has become quite difficult.  Starting the marriage license application/submission 3 weeks in advance, is advised.

 

DC Marriage Bureau

The DC Marriage Bureau will issue emergency marriage license through their online marriage application process.  You will have to have a valid reason for the emergency.

Prince George County Maryland

The Prince George’s County marriage bureau will only process an emergency marriage license through a judge.  The applicant has to petition a court judge for approval.

Reasons for waiving the Covid19 rules, may be listed above.

 

Virginia Courthouse 

The Alexandria, Arlington County, Fairfax marriage bureaus are open and will continue issuing regular marriage license.  Some courts will conduct virtual interviews.  While others, may operate on the appointment only basis.

Arlington VA Courthouse

NO APPOINTMENT = NO LICENSE (See steps below):

  1. First, complete the application on-line.
  2. Second, send an email to circuitcourt@arlingtonva.us requesting an appointment.
  3. Third, wait for a confirmation email stating the date and time of your appointment.  Give them 2 business days to reply.
  4. Fourth, take your current drivers license, go to the courthouse on the date and time of your appointment to complete your marriage license request.

 

Fairfax Virginia Courthouse

The Fairfax County marriage bureau is open and will issue marriage license between 8 am – 4 pm.  You still have to complete the application on-line, and both parties to the marriage must appear in person to retrieve it.  Don’t forget to bring your current state issued photo ID (drivers license).

Make sure you have made arrangements with an authorized celebrant to officiate you marriage.

Prince George’s County Maryland Marriage Bureau 

Prince George’s County Marriage Bureau is open, but not to the public.  Therefore, they will not be officiating any marriages at the court during this pandemic.

If you have applied for your marriage license, hoping to marry at the courthouse; they will mail it to you.  Please contact PG County Marriage Bureau for details.  301-952-3335

You have to request that the marriage license be mailed to you.

Getting a marriage license in PG County by affidavit may be bit challenging.  Here’s why.   You would have to find a marriage bureau in your jurisdiction that will process your request.
